Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child too young for lessons?

I start piano students as young as age 4 and we have a great time! We do many fun games and activities for young beginners so the little ones stay engaged. Your child will need to practice everyday outside of their lessons, and that will most likely require assistance from a parent for our youngest students.

The piano is one of the best instruments for little ones to play because it is an instrument that works for all sizes of humans! Clarinetists typically start around age 9 at the earliest. It requires more physical development as it requires a lot of air and strength to hold the instrument up while continuously changing fingering combinations.

Am I too old to learn an instrument?

Absolutely NOT! There is always room within ourselves for growth at any age. It takes a lot of courage to take up something new when you are an adult and I so respect it. I’ve taught many adult students who have come with different goals in mind. Our lessons are geared towards becoming the musicians they envision themselves being.

What if I’m not musically talented?

There is a place for everybody in music. I promise, you WILL get better as long as you have the desire and tenacity to stick with it. Be kind to yourself, start where you are, and enjoy the process. We’ve got this. πŸ™‚

Do I need to have an instrument to begin?

Yes. From the first lesson, I introduce assignments to practice at home so you progress every single day. If you weren’t able to practice daily, you wouldn’t be getting the most out of your investment, and let’s face it – you wouldn’t be having as much fun! We commit to new activities because we WANT to get better.

A good quality acoustic piano is recommended to best support a beginner. Did you know pianos can be easily and affordably rented as well? Renting is an excellent way to get started if purchasing is not yet an option. For clarinetists, a student model clarinet from a quality brand works fine for beginners. Clarinets can also be rented from music stores or borrowed from schools.

If you are interested in starting lessons but still need an instrument, DO contact me. I am happy to help with recommendations to get you started in the right direction.

How are lessons scheduled?

Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length. We meet once or twice a week on a regularly scheduled time and day. For most beginners, I recommend starting with 45-minute lessons. Those who are eager to advance are encouraged to take lessons twice a week, as well as those who would enjoy additional guided practice with an instructor.

Where is your studio located?

My home-studio is centrally located within east Long Beach, close to many of our local schools and freeways. I also offer lessons online for those unable to attend in-person.
