Clarinet – Piano
Hi! I’m Beejell Soco and I started teaching clarinet and piano lessons in 2007 in Long Beach, CA.
I grew up playing both the piano and clarinet and completely enamored with music. I am so lucky to not only have had the opportunity to play music growing up, but to pursue this passion in college and turn it into a career. The music teachers of my life were extraordinary – the kindest and most motivating people I knew. So I knew they did special work and was inspired to go into teaching myself.
I started my private studio in college and have continued to grow it since. In addition, I worked as a part-time instrumental music teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District for almost a decade. I am also a clarinet coach at several schools in the area and a church organist on weekends for services, weddings, and special events.
Having taught in large classroom settings and small group sectionals in my public school teaching experience, I have always appreciated the special level of depth and breadth private lessons can offer. I find the long-term working relationships I have with my private students very inspiring as I get to experience first-hand how their musicianship, skill, and love for music grow over the years.
I also see my students as whole people, not just musicians. The skills we practice in music are also skills that help build character and growth in the other areas of our lives. I believe in establishing a positive and nurturing environment for my students so they can feel comfortable trying new things and taking risks, knowing they’ll be supported through the entire process.
Music has always been a space I feel like I could explore, be creative, and truly express myself. It is also a place where I can keep myself challenged and practice a healthy level of grit and determination on a regular basis – whether in learning a new piece of music myself, or in figuring out how I can best serve my students week after week. Through our work together, I hope to share my affection for music and instill the confidence in my students that they can achieve anything they set their minds to – in music and in life!
